Teen Bedroom Furniture
When thinking of furniture for your teenagers or preteen room, think apartment. They're rooms end up being their own personal living space, more like a studio apartment (without the kitchen).
The wavy lines and square tubing of the Malibu Bed below that have an iced silver finish over steel create a very contemporary feel. You could put sports theme bedding, Nascar or just about any contemporary looking bedding. Keeping with the wave theme, this would easily work with a surfer look too.
You could also put a button tab "curtain" on the top rail on the front of the headboard and footboard, and take it to the back behind the wavy bars, and back to the front bottom to attach. What I'm trying to say here, is weave it in and out.
Or if you got tired of looking at the wavy lines, you could go from back to front, and pad the fabric panel. Since it would then be in front of the wavy lines, it'd be more comfortable to lean against and would give a totally different look.
These styles are more "grown up" and could easily move on into that first apartment. And remember, if the bedroom is small, just use a headboard.
Another great furniture for teen idea, is to use a roll away tool cabinet! Looks cool, and holds lots of stuff, and if he doesn't own any tools now, just give him time. He will eventually! And since they come in red, gray, brushed steel and chrome you can find one that will make a great accent!
Of course tool cabinets are also good for storing art and crafting supplies, or if he/she is into putting models together it's good for that too. I suppose she could use it for makeup and jewelry too! And if she has enough jewelry to fill it. . . . . well let's not even go there!

Platform Beds
If you look at the platform beds shown here, you'll see there are basically three kinds shown.
Raised - Meant to not have a bed skirt, so you can't really store anything underneath unless it's something you don't mind looking at. However you could attach a bedskirt with velcro from behind the platform side boards.
Recessed - This sits on a solid recessed base. Can't store anything under there, period. But it has the advantage of never having to clean under there and dig out missing socks!
Storage - You don't have to clean under this one either, and you have the added bonus of being able to store stuff in the drawers.
They all have a fairly modern feel to them, but they could easily be mixed with more traditional teen furniture.
Ideas: for the recessed platform bed:
- Glue wallpaper border around the base
- Glue something wild like a reflective paper or mirror type stuff.
- Stick Wallies on there
- Carpet
- Paint with Rust-Oleum's metal paint, so you can stick your magnet collection under there
Teen Furniture - Dare to be Different!
When you look at a piece of teen furniture, think of what it "could" be, not what it is meant to be used for. Are you stuck in the "conventional zone"? Things aren't necessarily what they seem.
Take a quick look at this cabinet at Paint Ideas. I know, I know, it's an office credenza. But think of what it "could" be, such as furniture for your teen or preteen! It could have a TV and speakers sitting on top, and components and DVD's stored inside, or easily be used for clothing.
They offer a project sheet on how to achieve that look using hammered metal paint. It's an old rusty metal cabinet that would work great for a piece of teen bedroom furniture.
Rust-Oleum has a Hammered Metal paint that can be painted right over rust. It gives the effect of those high end tool boxes and workbenches that have that textured finish on them.
This look would be great in an automotive theme bedroom, or just one that was going for that industrial or contemporary decor look. The paint comes in several colors too, so have fun with it! It's indoor/outdoor so you can use it on all kinds of stuff. I painted my Dad's mailbox with it. I was impressed with how easy it was to work with.
Have an open mind when you are out shopping around for teen furniture. Check out the new industrial looking cabinets meant for the garage at places like Lowes and Home Depot. I think they would look great in the teen bedroom as storage pieces.
