Buy multi-functional ageless kid storage pieces . . .

You don't necessarily have to buy baby furniture pieces for kid storage in the nursery and toddler's room. Plan ahead and buy a tall bookcase or dresser and hutch. Just be sure you fasten them to the wall. (Check out my Safety page for places to find emergency and safety information for your children.)
In the lower portion can be storage for the toddler's access, and the upper portion for seasonal items or things that aren't used too often. Paint or glue pictures of what goes into each drawer or cupboard on the front so he can easily tell where to put things. You can even make this a game.
There's no reason small toys and books can't be put in a dresser drawer if that's all you have room for. Later as the child grows, this dresser can still be useful even into the teen years. And if you bought well built kid storage pieces, they can be refinished if need be.
Wouldn't a nice little Wood Storage Bench & Cushion be nice at the foot of the bed? And what a perfect place to stash those "dress up" outfits, or some of the sports equipment!
If the bed is up off the floor, utilize the space underneath with underbed kid storage drawers that you either buy or make yourself. Just be sure they are easy for your toddler to pull out and push back.
If these are sturdily built, with strong lids, they could be used for seating for the kids, not just kid storage and organizing. Just throw on some cushions if needed, and when they are through, they can push the drawer back under the bed, and stack the cushions on the floor.
Bookcase and bin units seem to be all the rage right now. You can get them in several configurations and different colors. Actually I think they are rather practical for kid storage and also add some color to a room, and can make getting organized fun. There are some that have a top shelf on them which are a good height to put a lamp on, making them a great dual function piece of furniture
The and Target both offer some really nice storage solutions for kids. The Company Store has furniture quality pieces that can last for years, meaning they can be refinished years down the road if your color scheme or needs change. While you're spending your money, you just as well get something than the kids can hand down to their kids. After all, their kids WILL be your grand kids you know!

Stackable storage cubes are great for kid storage. You can just use one layer while the kids are small, and as they get older start stacking them up. Again, just be sure to fasten them well once you start stacking them. Of course these are great seating too with a cushion on the top.
You can even add wheels if you want, then push three or four together to make a table, then pull them out when they need seating. However most cubes with wheels underneath will be too tall for young children to use as seating.
