Where to Start Decorating a Boy Bedroom
First, take inventory. What do you have that you want to use in the room re-do? Did you use a convertible crib for him when he was a baby? If so you already have a headboard, and if you planned ahead when you bought his dresser and night stand, you are all set there as well. But if you are needing to buy those large ticket items, you just as well buy what he will need as a teen.
Unless you or he just prefer a complete bed, you can probably get away with just the headboard when decorating boy bedroom. Bedding fits them better anyway. Trying to tuck bedding in and around a footboard is a pain. Get a night stand that has a drawer and cupboard, or bank of drawers, so he can put stuff in there and keep it off the floor and out of site.
Buy a decent size dresser, because as he grows, so will the amount of space his clothes take up. If you opt to not get an entertainment center, get a dresser that will work to hold the TV on top.
Above all else, keep in mind that this is not only a bedroom, it's a play room, a hide away, his office for doing homework and will be housing toys as well as furniture. And toys and play usually means friends and rough housing. So whatever you decide to do for your boys bedroom make it durable! There may well be camping, science projects, crafts, reading, snacking and of course homework going on in there.
Ideas for Boys Bedding from Overstock.com
Overstock.com has an ever changing supply of bedding, so you might want to check them out. Although it seems at this time anyway, they seem to have more grown up bedding than kid's bedding, it's worth checking out. Here's a few examples from a recent visit:
Try a Coca Cola Bedding Set. I've seen it at Overstock.com and it includes comforter, shams and bed skirt featuring vintage Coca-Cola signs and billboards over a denim-colored material. The sheets are a white grounded percale with a vintage stripe and icons of Coca-Cola memorabilia with panel-printed pillow cases.
Great for your kids' rooms, or an out-of-this-world Space Odyssey guest room decor, this traditional quilt set is a great deal also at Overstock.com. Crafted in the true patchwork tradition, this fun quilt set features a distinctly modern design. Its dark blue quilted background is adorned with appliqued planets and stars in vibrant shades of yellow, orange, red, green, and blue. Yellow edging adds a touch of well-finished detail.
Check out the Red Bandana Print bedding set that is just begging to be mixed in with a couple denim blue shams and box pleated denim blue bedskirt. And the reversible Into 250 tc Bed-in-a-Bag comforter set in shades of blue and gold in a geometric pattern that would be perfect for a little bit older boy's room. The set boasts soft tones in cream, light blue, grey, navy, and sage.
Storage for the boy stuff. . .
For more storage ideas, check out the kid storage page, and don't miss the kid room themes.
An entertainment center or armoire would be a great addition to your boys room decorating project for storage for all those electronics, games, movies and books. If he's got a computer, or will be getting one at some point, since he really needs a desk for homework, you just as well get one that will work for that forthcoming computer system while you're decorating a boy bedroom.
Loft beds are great because they get the bed up off the floor, and in the same space provide storage and usually also a desk space. So if you are limited on space, you might consider this option. There are some really nice ones out there that have a full size bed on top instead of just a twin, so it's nice for the older kids. They are most often found in wood, but now there are a few out there that are made of very nice looking metal that gives them a more industrial or contemporary feel.
