Bed Dimensions and Bedding Sizes
Manufacturers have general standard bedding sizes that they use as guidelines. And the bedding ( bedspreads, comforters, and sheet sizes) all pretty much follow. When you're getting ready to lay down some cash for a new bed, you need to be sure it's going to fit in your space.
Don't Forget The Headboard
The bed size (or mattress size) is for the bare mattress. Headboards usually run a few inches larger than the width of the standard mattress size, to allow for your bedding. So if you are putting a bed in a tight spot, size does matter!
By the time you've added a mattress pad, sheets, a blanket and a comforter to that queen sized bed, you're looking at roughly 68" in width. Plus, if you're thinking about cramming it up against a wall on one side, be sure you have enough room to pull the bed out to tuck the bedding down behind that mattress. It's not a pleasant task, but it can be done.
Beyond Standard Bedding Sizes
You get what you pay for so be careful. Discount or cheap bedding is usually made skimpy. They make it with as little fabric, at the smallest size they can get away with.
If you're buying seconds, like at a factory outlet, again be careful with bedding sizes. And always insist that you get inside the bag to verify size. Often times, the tag on the bedding is the wrong size, or the package the bedding is in, is mismarked.
Also, if you're purchasing a print or patterned bedding, again take it out of the bag and look at it. The print may not match, or it may be blurred along one side or even be missing completely in spots.\
I once purchased a set of queen sized sheets at a factory outlet, and it was an ivy print. 6 inches on one side of the fitted sheet was pure white with no pattern on it at all! But I could live with that. I just put that side on the side of the bed you didn't see when you came into the room.
Also keep in mind how tall (thick) your mattress is, so you know whether you need a deep pocket fitted sheet or not. As a general rule, the more you pay, the more generous sized the bedding will be. In fact I have a set of 500 thread count sheets in a queen size that are actually too big for my mattress! And it's hard to keep it tucked under.
